For our most experienced surfers, the northeast boasts some of the best waves in Britain, often attracting team riders from across the UK and frequently featuring in Carve/Wavelength magazines. Whilst the sea temperature can get as cold as 5 degrees in the depths of winter, a decent wetsuit (6mm recommended) can easily overcome the chill of the North Sea.

Our most consistent local break is an empty beachy hidden behind an old magnesium works accessed through a disused railway tunnel! This often produces fast hollow barrels and long steep walls.

When possible, our ‘seasoned pros’ regularly travel out of county Durham into Yorkshire and Northumberland in search of the best swell! These parts of the coastline are littered with epic reefs and heavy slabs, all you need to know is where to look and when to go. And if the charts look good, a trip up to Scotland (Thurso East) is never out of the question!

Durham Uni Surf Club provides an excellent meeting point for experienced surfers to exchange numbers, arrange transport and share lifts to the local breaks whenever the waves are on!
